VaHi Safety Team Report November 2017

News and Notes
Once again, all crime in Virginia-Highland during the past month was property crime including thirteen larceny-from-vehicle reports and six other larcenies. Please clean out your vehicle of all belongings and encourage any visitors you have to the neighborhood to do the same. If we present a target rich environment, thieves will continue to prey on our neighborhood. And while we are fortunate that we are not experiencing violent crimes at this time, APD also would like to put an end to these thefts.

Also, as you can see from the report below elsewhere in the zone serious crimes are taking place. Burglaries, stolen vehicles, stolen firearms being used in armed robberies

A Message from Major Peek Regarding Zone 6 Burglary Arrests

Good evening Zone 6,

Recently, we have experienced an increase in burglaries. Please know that Zone 6 APD has been working diligently to identify the persons responsible. We are also partnering with other APD Zones and our surrounding law enforcement partners including the DeKalb County Police Department. Please know that we severely concerned with the incidents and as a result, we need your help. We know that many crimes are being committed by using stolen vehicles. Unfortunately, many stolen vehicles are being taken because spare keys are being left in vehicles. If possible, please do not leave extra keys in your vehicles. We also ask that you do not leave garage remote controls inside your vehicles overnight. We do not want to make it easy for criminals to be successful. Additionally, please do not leave firearms inside your vehicles. The clean car campaign is real and it is clear that criminal are shopping by entering vehicles looking for valuable items. Let’s not let Zone 6 be known as the best place to shop. We want to keep our communities safe.

In attempts to help, please make sure that you pay attention to what’s happening around your neighborhoods. If you see suspicious or obvious illegal activity, please do not confront anyone. Please call police immediately and report the crime as a crime in progress. Please stay on the line with the dispatcher so that responding police units can receive live updates as they arrive. If you have video, please do not hesitate to forward to police so that we can determine if it is usable. Also, don’t forget to keep lights on at night. We want to do all that we can to ensure that we have safe and livable communities. Thank you for all that you do to support your law enforcement partners. You are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Major T. D. Peek Commander Zone Six Precinct

Reminder: 6th Annual Toy Drive and Giveaway for APD Zone 6

Just a quick reminder that John Wolfinger is still collecting new unwrapped toys through this Wednesday the 13th. Just drop them off on his front porch at 1054 Vance Avenue. If anyone is feeling especially generous, we have not had any bicycles donated this year, and we always need some gifts for older children as well. The officers of Zone 6 are hoping to have toys for over 100 children this year, so your gifts are truly appreciated.

Holiday Shopping Safety

It’s that time of year when we are shopping both at local shops and online and will have many more packages than usual. Please remember basic safety practices. If you make several purchases and decide to leave them in your vehicle while you continue to shop, please make sure they are out of sight. Also, if possible, move your vehicle to a new location so that thieves who may be watching don’t know what you hid in the trunk. In a crowded parking lot, they can be in and out of your vehicle in a couple of minutes with the treasures you hoped to put under the tree.

For online purchases, please do not have packages delivered to your home unless you will be there to receive them. You can ship packages to your office, or take advantage of the package deliver service offered by our good friends at Morningstar Storage. Just stop in and fill out a waiver form and give them you contact information. Then you can have packages delivered securely and they will hold them for your pick-up.

You can also do ship-to-store with some of our shops like Intown Ace. Find what you want on their website (where they have a larger selection), then have it shipped to the store and pick it up here in the neighborhood.

Fire Safety Tip

Representatives from Atlanta Fire Rescue report out at every NPU-F meeting. At a recent meeting we learned that a common cause of house fires are bathroom fans that are left running for extended periods of time. Apparently, the motors in the typical fan of this type is not designed to run for hours on end, so when we flip it on after a shower and then head off to work, there is a risk that it could overheat and cause a fire. From now on, we will be using the fan to clear the steam from the room and then turning it off before we head off for our day.
